Asians are often under-represented in the mainstream media, unless there’s a story about a tragedy (like currently in Japan), a gang-related crime, or a stereotypical story about model-minority Asian students getting straight A’s. If you’ve ever wondered how to get your community’s news on the air, or reported in the newspapers, here’s your chance to learn from the pros: Professionals who work in television stations and newspapers.

Join members of AAJA Denver, the Association of Asian American Journalists, as we offer an introduction to reaching out and creating relationships with the local media outside your communities.

The Asian Community Media Workshop will be designed to help you get the word out about your community, event or performance.

We’ll help you understand how the media work, how to tell if you have a good story, and how to write a press release that grabs the attention of a reporter, editor or assignment desk. There will be hands-on breakout sessions so you can have your own press releases critiqued in one session, or get help putting together a press release in another. You’ll learn how you need to adjust your approach if you’re contacting TV instead of print media.

AAJA Denver’s Asian Community Media Training will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 12 at FOX31, 100 E. Speer Blvd. Underground parking will be provided. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.

Space is limited. The fee is $35. Contact Joe Nguyen, aajadenver@gmail.com, 303-378-9832 for more information.

This workshop is sponsored by AAJA Denver, FOX31 and the Asian Chamber.
